State of the project – June 2016
The aim of our project is to examine the effects of sleep disturbances on the emotional control of adults with ADHD. Because there is increasing evidence of the frequent comorbidity between ADHD and a disordered sleep, we want to explore a potential influence between disregulated sleep patterns and the emotional lability and social difficulties so frequently reported by adults with ADHD.
So far we have assessed 50 adults with ADHD, collecting data regarding the severity of ADHD symptoms, their sleep habits, the presence of depressive or anxiety simptoms, the level of irritability and emotional control.
People with ADHD included in such research study received a clinical diagnosis of ADHD, based on results by screening rating scales, the diagnostic interview DIVA 2.0, and a clinical history documenting the chronicity and pervasiveness of the disorder.
For examining sleep habits and emotional control, we used the following rating scales:
• Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS)
• Insomnia Severity Index (ISI)
• Irritability, Depression and Anxiety Scale (IDAS)
• Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning Scale (BDEFS).
We have published the progress of our research in a local journal and informed on the importance of the relationship between sleep problems and ADHD symptomatology through conferences and papers. We wrote an article for the AIFA Onlus journal (June 2015) and recently we published the following paper:
• Salerno L, Makris N, Pallanti S. Sleep disorders in adult ADHD: a key feature. Journal of Psychopathology 2016;22:135-140
We are confident in concluding the data collection by October 2016.
Aim of the study: We will assess the presence of sleep disorders in 40 adults with, and 40 adults without ADHD, using specific rating scales.
Further, we will compare emotional control and impairment level of ADHD individuals with sleeping difficulties to those with ADHD only.
If our data will confirm a relationship between sleeping disturbances and poor emotional control in adults with ADHD, and if they have a significant impact on impairment level, appropriate interventions will be implemented in order to ameliorate their quality of sleep.
There are still obstacles for assessing and treating adequately these aspects in ADHD adults. We need your contribution in order to improve the quality of care for people with ADHD!
